In 2001, he proposed with his [[collaborator]] Maoxin Wu a novel mechanism of anesthetic action that says general [[anesthetic]]s produce [[unconsciousness]] by perturbing [[oxygen]] pathways in neural membranes and proteins. This view is not at all accepted by the [[scientific community]] at large. Indeed, there are no commonly accepted theory on how general anesthetics work, despite they have been in use for more than 150 years.{{citation needed}}
